There is something special about you
Whenever I’m interviewed for podcasts or fireside chat, I always get this question: “Tell me about yourself?”
That question used to trip me up all the time.
Do I tell them how I wanted to be a hairstylist and a cheerleader when I was younger?
Do I tell them that I grew up as a military kid?
Do I tell them that I started a whole marketing agency even though I didn’t like marketing?
Like…what part of myself do I highlight?!
Over the years, I’ve simplified this answer: I don’t have to hide any part.
Humans are so multifaceted (especially when you’re creative). Sometimes we learn to compartmentalize parts of ourselves, but we don’t have to. Does that mean I get up there telling everybody all of my business? Nah. But, I have learned to have a little elevator pitch that sprinkles on the parts of my identity that I feel comfortable sharing depending on the occasion.
I’m sharing this as a reminder to you. Whether you’re on a podcast or during a job interview, be yourself.
Take some time this week to focus on encouraging yourself, remaining authentic, and expressing yourself because there’s no one else like you.
I’ll close out with some advice from one of my favorite doctors besides my sister, Dr. Suess.
“Today you are you! That is truer than true! There is no one alive who is you-er than you!” -Dr. Suess
You are enough.
